Community comes together to help victims of Brookhaven fire

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. — Nearly 50 people lost their homes due to a raging fire at a Brookhaven apartment complex Friday night.

After Channel 2 Action News aired video of the fire, many people came forward to help the victims.

Through donated items, the victims are starting to piece their lives back together.

Channel 2’s Sophia Choi was at the Metropolitan Artifacts where one of the families were looking through the donated items.

The owner of the store and his daughter organized the collection shortly after hearing about the fire at the Marquis Terrace Apartments.

“I made a post to Facebook, and it snowballed, and it turned into a huge response, where we were able to get everything collected,” said Julie Silber.

DeKalb County firefighters helped load up a box truck to deliver the items for families to pick out.  Area residents donated everything from clothing to furniture -- all in good condition.

“It feels good, because we're seeing, you know, the community helping out, and there is people out there that actually cares,” said resident Lisseth Landero.

Choi spoke with the mayor of Brookhaven, who says he knows firsthand what families go through when they lose everything in a fire, because it happened to him.
