Security a concern after gang-related fight at football game

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Police say gang members started a brawl at South Cobb High School late August. One week later, the Cobb County Police Gang Unit and nearby officers were asked to patrol the game.

Students hoped for an uneventful football game at South Cobb High School's Clay Stadium in Austell on Friday.

Police believe the fight involved gang members. School officers used pepper spray on the fighting teens.

Three juveniles and 17-year-old Qwantavis Evans were arrested. Evans is charged with fighting, obstruction and criminal gang activity. Police said Evans did not attend either school.

"There's of course the other crowds who want to go there to start problems," former student Brian Messer said.

A Cobb County Police spokesman said officers were asked to patrol the high school if they were not busy on other calls.

School officials are protective of the school's image and asked Channel 2 Action News not to be on the campus.

The violence was top of mind for many at the game.
