The group that is for the Mableton cityhood initiative say they want to see more redevelopments and fewer abandoned properties and countless tire shops along Veterans Memorial Highway in Cobb County.
But the group that is against the cityhood movement is concerned about higher taxes and feels like there isn’t a solid plan to make Mableton a city.
“We don’t have enough information, and the information we do have is actually quite concerning,” Tanye Leake said.
Leake is a member of Preserve South Cobb, an organization that is against Mableton cityhood.
“We officially formed as a ballot committee in August of this year, shortly after we found out about the cityhood initiative,” Leake said.

Preserve South Cobb believes there is a lack of transparency in the Mableton cityhood initiative.
“What we didn’t realize is that they were ultimately including areas that are not currently in the Mableton area as it is known today,” Leake said.
The committee for the city of Mableton is pushing to make Mableton its own city.
A representative told Newell the proposed city map has been public since 2018 and says there are no residents in Smyrna that are included in the proposed city limits.

Earlier this year, they showed Channel 2 some of the reasons why they want Mableton to become its own city.
They want to see fewer abandoned properties and countless tire shops along Veterans Memorial Highway.
“There are thousands of things just like this, where you know we could really do a lot of tear downs and build it up,” William Wilson of South Cobb Alliance said.
If Mableton becomes its own city, it would have its own planning, zoning, and code enforcement. However, the county would continue to provide public safety services.
