Over a dozen charged with murder in deadly gang-related shooting of 23-year-old, police say

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Neighbors near Kennesaw State University are trying to wrap their head around a 23-year-old’s murder.

The shooting happened as neighbors watched Sunday night football, and now more than a dozen teenagers are charged with murder.

Channel 2 Cobb County bureau chief Chris Jose went through jail records and learned everyone is being charged as adults, and the whole thing is gang-related.

Devon Collins lives just feet away from where the shooting happened.

“(I’m) worried. I want to protect my son, and I moved out of a bad area to try to circumvent some of that,” Collins said.

Yellow police tape remains around where the chaotic scene unfolded along Towne Crossing on Sunday, where one man died.

Collins told Jose that he heard a loud pop.

“A quick pop because my balcony is right over here, and it literally happened back over there by that light pole,” Collins said, showing Jose how it unfolded.

Cobb police arrested a group of people in connection to the deadly shooting of Devere Blake. Their ages range from 16-to 20 years old.

Investigators say Kanye Sorrells, 16, pulled the trigger.

“First it was the fire truck that pulled up. Then the ambulance. And it then it seemed like cop car after cop car pulled up,” Collins said.

Police say this all started with a fight at a gas station.

Jose learned after going through arrest warrants that the incident involved rival gangs. Both groups showed up at the apartment complex with guns.

Investigators described this whole group as “willing participants of criminal activity.”

Police say some of them tried to take off and one tried to hide the gun that was used in the murder.

"I was like, ‘Wow, that’s crazy.’ That’s something I would have not imagined, neighbor Sarri Anderson said.

Investigators are now reviewing video from the gas station and apartment complex.

Records show all the suspects charged with murder remain in jail with no bail. They are facing charges of aggravated assault and murder-felony.
