Funeral held today for firefighter, wife found murdered in their home

ACWORTH, Ga. — Family, friends and co-workers said their final farewells for a young couple murdered inside of their Cobb County home.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon for Justin and Amber Hicks.

Police said 22-year-old Matthew Lanz shot and killed Cherokee County firefighter Justin and his wife, Amber, in their home in Acworth last week.

Close friends have started a foundation for the couple’s 2-year-old son, called Jacob’s Pathway Foundation. It will raise money for the young boy.

Dozens of people showed up Monday for a private visitation at His Hands Church in Woodstock.

“He’s a brother that everybody wanted and I am going to miss him dearly along with the entire department,” said friend Isaiah Johnson.

Audrey Logan was Amber’s best friend.

“We were like family growing up together and our children were growing up together and she was there for everything in my life,” Logan said. “We’re not leaving [their son Jacob’s] life, he’s stuck with us forever.”

The tragedy has brought the community closer together. Even total strangers lined the streets to say farewell to the couple.

A Gofundme for funeral expenses and to support the couple’s son raised nearly $70,000 from the community.
