Acworth apartment fire displaces families

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Flames tore through a Cobb County apartment building Saturday afternoon.

Residents ran from their units and firefighters worked hard to stop the flames from spreading.

Now Red Cross volunteers are at the scene for the people who live there.

At about 12:20 p.m., Cobb County emergency dispatchers received a 911 call that the Gazebo Apartments in Acworth were on fire.

In viewer video you can see the flames rising high and engulfing the 20-unit apartment building.

Residents describe the scene as fast-moving and hectic, with many units damaged by water as

sprinklers went off. Firefighters worked feverishly to stop the spread of the fire while the tenants stood by and watched in disbelief.

Resident Lindsay Stregman was coming home from work when she saw the flames,.

She told Channel 2’s Robert Ray the experience brought one of her worst fears to reality.

“Everybody was great about trying to get everybody else out,” Stregman said. “My neighbor across the hall was banging on doors getting people out.”

“My heart was pounding and racing.I was terrified. It's just unbelievable that this happened,” resident Adrien Britt said. “It's very sad and depressing. It's very sad.”

Fire officials say no one was injured and the flames were extinguished by mid-afternoon.

Investigators are now looking into the cause while many of the residents are going through their belongings and trying to figure out where to stay Saturday night.
