Loud music becoming an issue for homeowners near Riverdale restaurant

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Homeowners in a Riverdale subdivision say they’re stressed and want solutions to loud music being played at a restaurant behind their homes.

“You can hear the bass,” homeowner Onita Howard said.

Howard describes the music as a nuisance every weekend night.

“I’m stressed,” Howard said. “If I I wanted to sing all the songs, I could sing because that’s how loud the music is.”

The music she says is keeping her and her neighbors up at night is coming from this bar Whiskey BBQ, located directly behind Howard’s home.

“I’m like oh my God, here it is again,” she said. “It’s really bad on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.”

Owner Deborah Jones told Channel 2′s Ashli Lincoln she’s aware of the complaints.

“We are a small African American business and we’ve been trying to be a little more cognizant of our neighbors,” Jones said.

Jones says they’ve been open for two years now.

“We are not a young hip hop type business any sound that’s coming out of this business is mellow,” she said.

She says within the last month they’ve been taking steps to try and reduce escaping noise after several complaints.

“I’m making all kinds of steps since we’re having it enclosed now, we’re going to make a sound barrier, so after that point I’ve already alerted the officials that this is what we’re going to do, and they told me to keep them abreast of it,” Jones said.

Channel 2 investigated ordinances for the city of Riverdale and found a person or business can be in violation if creating a noise nuisance after the hours of 10 p.m. or within a radius of 500 feet.

Howard says she understands residents’ concerns and is working with the city to address them.

“It’s a learning process for me,” Jones said. “I wasn’t trying to get the place shut down, I only want the place to change the rules, or make some type of adjustment, so they can respect us.”
