CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — New variants of COVID-19 are spreading across the country.
That’s why Clayton County is handing out free COVID-19 test kits again.
Channel 2′s Steve Gehlbach dropped in on a location in Riverdale where residents can pick them up.
The county has thousands left over from when it stockpiled back in 2021 and they should work in detecting any new variants.

Residents just have to show ID and proof they live in the county to get a free test.
“These can be a life-changing, life-saver,” one city employee said.
The Frank Bailey Senior Center is one of 11 giveaway locations, where many are taking advantage.
“I had COVID about two weeks ago, and it’s so important to test, before and after,” a woman getting a test said.
The fire department’s headquarters in Riverdale is also stocked, along with senior centers and rec centers around Clayton County.

The interim fire chief hopes the tests get used as they are seeing cases of the current variant pop up…and leading into the fall season.
“We’re seeing some spikes here and there in positive COVID cases so given that we have an excess of 7,000 free in-home tests kits left, our thought was to get those out to the community as quick as we can to our residents.”
Besides the fire headquarters, senior and rec centers…they’ll also be free at the next “sips and sounds” concert event
That’s on Thursday at Clayton County International Park, as long as they have supplies.
