Clayton County Schools has a strategy to recruit teachers: Hire from within

JONESBORO, Ga. — Jonesboro High School senior Aarione Jackson says she owes much to her favorite teacher, Miss Clark. She has been my school mom since I got here.

“She just made me feel great about myself,” Jackson said.

Which is why Jackson plans to major in education in college.

In fact, she promises to, and she’s not the only one.

Channel 2′s Berndt Petersen spoke with several Clayton County students, all of whom plan to become teachers.

“Just signing this and knowing your next big step brings something bigger made me feel like I’m doing something great,” Isaiah Martin, a graduating senior, said.

Martin is among 14 seniors from Clayton County who recently took part in Georgia Future Educators Signing Day.

“We do our best to make sure we have homegrown,” Catherine Hale-Henry, a school district recruiter, told Channel 2 Action News.

Hale-Henry is part of the program to recruit the best educators they can find, and she says the best of the best are former Clayton County students.

“We want them to know they can get a job and the job is there for them,” Clayton County teacher Marsha-Anne Williams-Hamilton said.

They may travel far to go to college, but home is where the heart is.

“It means a lot to me to be part of the Clayton County public schools community,” Destiny Singleton, another graduating senior, said.

Jackson says she was proud to take the pledge. She wants to follow in the footsteps of Miss Clark.

“You can do this. Apply yourself. Don’t doubt. She made me feel like I had the ability to go far. So she is my favorite teacher,” Jackson said.
