CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — The Clayton County Jail’s conditions were listed as the reason for an inmate’s death in 2025.
According to the Clayton County Medical Examiner’s Office, Scott Worthy died due to medical neglect and uninhabitable living conditions at the jail.
Worthy, 57 of Jonesboro, was hospitalized at Grady Memorial Hospital on Aug. 30, 2025 after suffering from “significant physical deterioration” while in the jail.

The report from the ME said Worthy became unable to perform basic activities to live without assistance and was hospitalized.
On Sept. 6, 2025, he died.
Due to conditions, ME Brian Byars declared Worthy’s death as a homicide.
An autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation found Worthy suffered from a serious bacterial infection called crysipelas.
While hospitalized, Worthy tested positive for Streptococcus pyogenes and developed septic shock, respiratory failure, renal failure, encephalopathy and multiple other complications “associated with severe systemic infection.”
Channel 2 Action News is reaching out to the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office for comment.
