LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. — A popular attraction and Georgia nonprofit are asking for your help in naming some very special animals.
Rock City and and Wings to Soar are holding a contest to name a new pair of peregrine falcons.
Rock City and Wings to Soar have been partners since 2006 in an ongoing peregrine falcon restoration project. It aims to reestablish the breed in Lookout Mountain region.
The new additions, one male and one female, were hatched on May 2 in Minnesota. The siblings are staying at Rock City until they are ready to be released into the wild.
“It is the male that establishes the nesting territory,” said John Stokes with Wings to Soar. “So, if we want peregrines to nest in the area again, we need males to return here. Apparently, there are enough females in the region for the males to recruit. But the state of Georgia also wants us to release some females for different bloodlines.”
Before they can be released though, they need new names. That’s where you can come in. Voting is open until June 19 on the Rock City Facebook page.
Here are some winners chosen in the past: Garnet, Frieda, Rocky, Ted, Zenith, Chatty, Lookout, Fourscore, Orville, Wilbur, Lewis, Clark, Heckle, Jeckle, Apollo and Artemis.
If you want to watch the sibling falcons, there is live feed of the birds here.
