Senate committee sends former GA Rep. Doug Collins to full vote for VA secretary confirmation

ATLANTA — The U.S. Senate Veterans Affairs Committee approved moving former Georgia Rep. Doug Collins to a full Senate vote for confirmation as VA Secretary.

On Thursday morning, former Rep. Doug Collins VA Secretary confirmation was approved to go to a full vote by the U.S. Senate.

President Donald Trump nominated Collins for VA Secretary on Nov. 14, just over a week after his electoral win. During Trump’s first term in office, Collins sought one of Georgia’s two U.S. Senate seats and left Congress, but did not win the primary election.

His political career began with three terms in the Georgia General Assembly, where he served from 2007 to 2013, before assuming office after winning election to the U.S. House of Representatives.

In the interim, Collins served on the president’s legal team.

Before entering politics, Collins was a member of the U.S. military, having enlisted in 2002. His most recent service position was as an Air Force chaplain, and he remains a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

Now approved by the committee, Collins will still need a vote by the full U.S. Senate to officially take office as the Secretary of the VA. That vote has not been scheduled.
