UPDATE: Police say man on ATV who hit APD officer first tried to hit two other officers

ATLANTA — Police say a man on an ATV who hit and seriously injured an Atlanta police officer during a protests first tried to hit at least 2 other officers.

Avery Goggans, 42, was arrested after hitting officer Maximilian Brewer last month as Brewer tried to keep protesters safe in an intersection.

Brewer had serious injuries to his legs and was just moved out of the ICU to a regular room at Grady Memorial Hospital Thursday to continue his recovery.

Police said Brewer was on foot when Goggans crashed into him at a high rate of speed. The accident happened about an hour after a curfew went into effect in City of Atlanta as police attempted to subdue lingering protesters. Dozens of officers went running to help as the accident happened.

Police initially charged Goggans with DUI drugs and alcohol, serious injury by vehicle and other offenses.

After an investigation, police said that Goggans tried to hit two other officers at two different intersections before deliberately driving into Brewer.

Goggans sustained minor injuries.

Charges against Goggans have been upgraded to include aggravated assault, aggravated battery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Brewer has been with Atlanta Police for 18 years and works in the motors unit.
