Tight deadline to fill the late Rep. John Lewis’ congressional seat

ATLANTA — The candidate who succeeds the late U.S. Rep. John Lewis will have to apply online by Sunday night, the Georgia Democratic Party said Saturday night.

The 5th Congressional District seat has been held since 1987 by the civil rights hero.

Now, the Democratic Party of Georgia will have a tight turnaround to legally fill Lewis' seat.

State law gives the party until 4:30 Monday to replace Lewis’ name on the November ballot for a two-year term.

Interested applicants must apply online by 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

The executive committee will then meet on Monday at noon to consider the candidates. Members of that committee include Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, Stacey Abrams and former party chair DuBose Porter.

Interested applicants can submit their information HERE.

There will be a separate special election to fill the remainder of Lewis’ term, which expires in January. Gov. Brian Kemp has 10 days to schedule that vote, according to our partners at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Four of Georgia’s 14 U.S. House seats are open in November.
