ATLANTA — Steve Bivins is the type of son who is always looks out for his mom.
“I’d be definitely worried when a storm came through. Nine out of 10 times it could have fallen down,” Bivins said.

A 100-year-old oak was leaning over Dorothy Bivins southeast Atlanta home. The tree had been dead for a good 15 years.
Dorothy’s family and neighbors were very concerned that any day it could have hit the house. Channel 2 first introduced you to Dorothy and showed you the 80 feet tall tree last month.
Help arrived on Monday. The local chapter of a nonprofit that works with seniors set up to bring the tree down.
“This is a real stretch for our group. ‘Neighbor in Need,’ at least our chapter in East Atlanta, exclusively does emergency repairs on homes. We’ve never taken a tree down before,” neighbor Bill Gould said.

The nonprofit said it received a spike in donations, a good deal from Gunnison Tree Services and help from Georgia Power to take the tree down. Crew members said the largest chunks of the old oak weighed 7,000 pounds each.

On behalf of his mom, Steve Bivins is glad it’s gone and grateful to the folks who made that happen.
“I thank God for them. I really do thank God to everybody who pitched in and helped,” Bivins said.
