Nearly 50 metro Atlanta schools go for the gold in annual Special Olympics

ATLANTA — Hundreds of special athletes from several metro Atlanta schools had the opportunity to shine in the annual Special Olympics.

More than 300 very special athletes from nearly 50 schools in the metro, ran, jumped, and threw their way to Olympic glory on Tuesday.

The marching band helped set the mood for Atlanta Public Schools’ Special Olympics held at the Lakewood stadium.

The student-athletes competed in track and field events such as the 25 and 50-meter dashes, wheelchair races, bean-bag toss, and long jumps.

APS has held the Special Olympics for students since 1981.
