ATLANTA — There is movement in the efforts to stop trains from trapping people in their neighborhoods.
Videos show people going over and under trains that block intersections for hours, even days at a time.

“This is a danger,” said Tim Brown.
Trains have been known to block Chappell Road Northwest where he lives in Atlanta’s historic Hunter Hills neighborhood for as many as 30 hours.
“It has pretty much paralyzed the community,” said Atlanta City Council Member Keisha Waites. “Then to hear, this is something that’s been happening for three decades, 30 years!”
Waites submitted this resolution Wednesday. It calls on federal lawmakers to create legislation to regulate how long trains can block intersections and idle.

“It’s my hope that we have a representative that will come to the table,” said Waites.
Sen. Raphael Warnock’s team said he is aware of the problem and is exploring legislation right now.
Rep. Nikema Williams represents the district that includes Hunter Hills. We are waiting for comment from her team.

California took the lead Friday, banning trains from idling for more than 30 minutes.
Georgia ranks fifth for the most reported blockages in the U.S. in the past year, with 1,265 reported. That’s according to the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Railroad Administration.
