ATLANTA — Students have returned to class after a natural gas leak early Wednesday afternoon.
Atlanta Gas Light said crews began helping first responders with a natural gas leak at Drew Charter Elementary School around 9 a.m. Wednesday. Students were relocated during the repairs.
Southern Company said just after 12 p.m. that crews had identified a malfunctioning part on the natural gas meter outside the school that had caused the natural gas odor.
Technicians safely completed repairs and said no natural gas was detected inside the school.
Drew Elementary released the following statement at the time of the natural gas leak:
"Please be advised that due to concern about a potential gas smell noticed outside of the Drew Elementary Academy building this morning, Elementary Academy students and staff are being temporarily relocated to the Junior Senior gymnasium on the Junior Senior Academy Campus. We are taking this step with an abundance of caution as a precautionary measure.
Please note that Drew has contacted the appropriate authorities to investigate the situation. We will keep you posted with updates.
Know that the safety of our students and staff is a top priority."
