Coco Gauff tests positive for COVID-19, will miss Olympics

ATLANTA — Tennis star Coco Gauff announced on Sunday that she has tested positive for COVID-19 and will not be able to play in the Tokyo Olympics.

The 17-year-old tennis phenom, who used to live in Atlanta, made the announcement via Twitter.

“It has always been a dream of mine to represent the USA at the Olympics, and I hope there will be many more chances for me to make this come true in the future,” Gauff wrote. “I want to wish TEAM USA the best of luck and a safe games for every Olympian and the entire Olympic family.”

It’s unclear if Gauff is experiencing symptoms of if she was vaccinated.

Gauff is the second American to not be able to travel to Tokyo for the games. USA Basketball’s Bradley Beal withdrew due to “health and safety protocols” It’s unclear if he tested positive for COVID-19.
