Apartment fire displaces families days before Christmas

Apartment fire displaces residents days before Christmas.

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Just days before Christmas, nearly a dozen people are left with nowhere to call home after flames ripped through a South Fulton County apartment complex Tuesday morning.

Officials tell Channel 2's Audrey Washington the fire at the Westwood Glen apartments on Fairburn Road spread quickly, destroying all four apartments in the building.

“I came out the house and the flames were going up,” resident Ronnie Hill said.
Hill and Allen Mitchell rushed over when they saw the flames and heard the cries for help.
“When I came out the flames were real high and the side of the wall fell off,” Mitchell said.
Everyone inside the building made it out, but two people suffered minor burns to their feet.
Firefighters worked for more than hour putting out the flames.

In all, 10 people were left with nowhere to call home, less than one week before Christmas.

“The lady next door, I know her, too,” Hill said. “She had a Christmas tree up and she had Christmas presents … . Now everything is gone.”

Washington asked the deputy fire chief what caused the fire. Deputy Chief Charles Stubbs told her that’s unclear, but he said an arson investigator is looking into the case.

“Is the fire suspicious?” Washington asked.

“No ma'am. Two of the occupants had burns on their feet from trying to get out, so whenever you have someone injured because of the fire we have to do an arson investigation,” Stubbs said.

As for the displaced families, the Red Cross is assisting with temporary housing, food and clothing.

Hill says his heart goes out to his friends who lost so much, right before the holidays.
