Investigators called it a tragic accident. A FedEx big rig driver was turning left from Harrison Road onto Virginia Avenue when he hit Lois Johnson, according to the Georgia State Patrol. The tractor-trailer's front left bumper hit Johnson and the two rear tires ran over her.
The tractor-trailer driver kept going until he received a call that he had hit someone, and he returned to the scene. Troopers said he didn't see her.
Witnesses said the victim was well-known in the East Point/College Park area, affectionately called "granny." She is being treated at Grady Hospital.
The driver has not been charged in the crash. Authorities said Johnson was jaywalking.
