10 people escape raging DeKalb house fire

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Crews are monitoring hot spots after fire damaged a home on Wedgefield Circle in DeKalb County.

Officials said all 10 people living in the home got out safely.

Crews finished boarding up the house just before 12 p.m. Wednseday. The family told Channel 2’s Wendy Corona everything they owned in that house is gone. Eight adults and two children were able to safely get out.

The fire broke out around 2 a.m. DeKalb Fire Rescue determined that it was a downstairs space heater that blew and started the house fire.

Candaisha Roberts said she was upstairs with her 2-year-old and 2-month-old. The infant was checked out for breathing issues, but is OK.

The family has two nights at a hotel thanks to the Red Cross, but doesn't know what they'll do from there.

Firefighters stressed that during the cold months, everyone should make sure to keep flammable objects like clothing away from space heaters.
