GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Channel 2 Action News has confirmed one person is dead and two were wounded in an incident near Phoenix High School, in Gwinnett County.
The shooting happened about 200 feet away from the school, on West Pike Street in Lawrenceville.
Witnesses told Channel 2's Tony Thomas some of the people involved in the shooting are students, but Lawrenceville police have not confirmed that information.
Jessica Zapata said she recognized some of the people running from the fight.
"I was in disbelief. I was just in disbelief because a few of those kids are in my class," she said.
Gwinnett County Schools officials put Phoenix High on a soft lockdown Monday afternoon while police investigated.
"This started with a large group of people. We don't know why they were gathered at this particular location," said Lawrenceville police Capt. Greg Vaughn.
An entire block of McConnell Street just off West Pike was blocked. The scene is about a half block from the open campus school.
Police said some of the group ran when officers arrived. A few moments later, Thomas saw at least two or three people who looked of high school age or young adults being questioned by police; one person was in handcuffs.
"At this point I don't know if they've recovered a weapon. The suspect in the shooting, I'm not sure if (he or she) still has the weapon or not, but nothing has been recovered at this time," said Vaughn.
More than a half hour after the shooting, two ambulances pulled away, heading toward the nearby Gwinnett Medical Center.
