Kids Camp At UGA Abruptly Canceled

ATHENS, Ga.,None — Hundreds of kids who signed up for a four-day sports camp at the University of Georgia will have to make new plans.

"My bags were packed yesterday night," said Hunter Waldrop.

The 8-year-old was looking forward to leaving Thursday for the camp that offered football, basketball and cheerleading. It would last through Sunday.

"Doing some drills, spending the night with friends, having some fun," Hunter said.

The camp was abruptly canceled Wednesday afternoon. According to the website for Heroes and Champions, the organization sponsoring the camp, the cancellation is due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

Hunter’s father said he got a call around 4 p.m. Wednesday saying a medical emergency forced the cancellation. Later, he was told the camp was called off because several high-profile athletes backed out of the event. He and his wife said it was hard to break the news to Hunter.

"You're not going to camp. You're not going to spend the night on the campus. You're not going to hear the great speakers we've been talking about and looking forward to," his mother Tracey Waldrop said. "It was horrible."

"After all this money my parents spent on me, they just cancel the camp," Hunter said.

Philips learned hundreds of families paid nearly $400 each to send their kids to the camp.

"We all want to know why, why is this happening," Tracey Waldrop said.

Organizers told the Waldrop family they would start processing refunds within the next week and a half. Philips tried to contact organizers but was unable to reach a representative.
