CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. — A Georgia man is facing charges after police say he used artificial intelligence to help create fake accounts as part of an attempted retail scheme.

Chatham County police arrested Dieon Cornelius Love, 20, on Monday. He is charged with criminal attempt to commit a misdemeanor.
Authorities say Love posed as a delivery driver attempting to pick up an order from a major national retailer in Chatham County. Police believe he used AI to create fake accounts that made phony orders appear legitimate.
Authorities said store managers noticed signs that something was wrong before releasing any merchandise and contacted police. No items were handed over.

Police say the case marks the first time artificial intelligence has been used in a criminal investigation within the department’s jurisdiction.
“Technology is moving at breakneck speed, and AI adds a new and uncharted element to criminal activity,” Chatham County Police Chief Jeff Hadley said in a statement. “In this case, the retailer picked up red flags and alerted law enforcement. This is a good reminder to all of us to question anything that seems off or doesn’t feel right, especially when it deals with money, valuables, or personal information.”
Love was booked into the Chatham County Detention Center.
The case remains under investigation.
