"We will never forget about him ... we will always remember him and we will all live by the person that he was," said Sgt. Stephanie Wammock.
Someone shot and killed Sgt. Garry Castillo on Tuesday afternoon after he picked up a deposit from the Kroger store on Lavista Road.
Castillo's friends told Channel 2's Mark Winne that he was a hero.
"This is a tragic loss to his family and to the guard family," said Sgt. 1st Class Jody Reel. "We have lost one of our best."
The Georgia Army National Guard said Castillo was one of its citizen soldiers who survived months of war in Afghanistan only to lose his life in his civilian job as an armored truck guard.
"I just talked to him on the 12th of March," said Sgt. Maj. Charles Sheard. "We had drill. As usual, he was always smiling."
Investigators told Winne that Castillo was making a delivery and money pickup at the Kroger at Toco Hills on Tuesday at about noon.
"The victim was walking out with the money. The gunman ran up on him and shot him several times," authorities said.
Rewards totaling up to $105,000 are being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
"They didn't give him a chance," authorities said.
"If they could please call in ... because he deserves that," said Reel.
Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI at 404-679-9000.
