Credit Websites Get Warning Letters

ATLANTA — The FTC is warning 18 Internet credit monitoring websites that they must clearly disclose that a free credit report is available under federal law.

Many of the websites will give people their credit report or score for free, but by getting it people are signing up for credit monitoring service. If customers don't cancel the service in a matter of days, they have to pay for the monitoring service.

The FTC recently changed its rules to require websites like this to clearly state these reports are available for free, and the sites must have a link to the AnnualCreditReport.com and the FTC.

Violators are subject to penalties of up to $3,500 for each violation.
