CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — Rain continued to blanket Cherokee County overnight, adding to the sheen of ice that formed much of Wednesday.
"It took me three hours to get out. It was crazy," Darius Cassell told Channel 2 Action News.
Cassell said he hit a patch of black ice and ended up in a ditch.
"I was praying, hoping I wouldn't hit anything. I hit a mailbox," Cassell said.
Cassell wasn't alone.
Cherokee County Sheriff's officials said they responded to approximately 300 wrecks and 130 stranded motorist calls to 911 since 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Wrecker driver Dave Whelan said he could barely keep up with the calls for help.
"I don't know how we're going get to everybody in these conditions," Whelan said.
In Holly Springs, treacherous conditions proved too much for some drivers and overnight Towne Lake Parkway in Woodstock was blocked off. Dozens of abandoned cars could be seen in a Publix parking lot nearby.
