The Tabernacle through the years Virginia Baptist minister Dr. Leonard Gaston Broughton was hired to lead a church in the Atlanta area in 1898.
His church grew quickly, and he eventually went looking for a larger venue. He sought the property at Luckie and Harris Street. Parts of the church balked at the property's price tag, so Broughton and some deacons bought the property themselves.

The Tabernacle through the years But the building couldn’t keep up with the church’s rapid growth.
A new facility was built and completed in 1911. It's the structure that stands today. (The Tabernacle)

It was sold as a venue for the 1996 Olympic Games. But that never happened.
