Paula Caray, wife of longtime Braves broadcaster Skip Caray, dies

ATLANTA — The family of longtime Atlanta Braves broadcaster Skip Caray announced that his wife of 33 years Paula died Saturday afternoon.

Paula and Skip Caray’s son Josh Caray, who followed in his father’s footsteps and works in baseball communications, shared a post on his mother’s Facebook page.

“It is with a heavy heart that we inform you our mother passed away this afternoon at 12:30. She went peacefully,” Josh wrote in the public post. “While we are saddened by her death, however mom, myself, and my siblings are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support that mom received the last few weeks. We are grateful she had so many friends in her life who cared about her so deeply and we are comforted by the fact she is no longer in pain and is reunited with our father again.”

The Atlanta Braves shared the following statement on social media:

“Our hearts are heavy with the passing of Paula Caray earlier today, wife of longtime Braves broadcaster Skip Caray. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends including her son Josh and daughter Shayelyn, and stepchildren Chip and Cindy.”

Skip and Paula Caray were married for 33 years until his passing on Aug. 3, 2008, nine days shy of his 69th birthday. Paula Caray spoke in May with our partners at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about her husband’s career.

Chip Caray paid tribute to his stepmother during the Braves broadcast against the Phillies Saturday night.

“A no non-sense mom and grandmother of seven, she lovingly pushed all she knew to be the best they could be and she made us better for it,” Chip Caray said. “If you loved Skip, you loved her too. She was the personification of the phrase ‘behind every good man is a great woman.”
