Injured Ronald Acuña Jr. still hopes to make trip to All-Star game for fans

The big Braves news of the weekend was the torn ACL suffered by star outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr.

Acuña was hurt Saturday night in Miami when he leaped to try and catch a fly ball in right field and landed awkwardly during an away game against the Marlins.

The outfielder collapsed and had to be taken from the field in a cart. An MRI revealed a complete ALC tear.

After Acuña had some time to catch his breath and get examined by the Braves medical team, he told Channel 2′s Zach Klein he’d still like to make an appearance at Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game. Acuña was voted in as a starter for the Tuesday game in Denver.

The Braves haven’t commented on whether they’ll let the All-Star make the trip with his injured knee, but it appears the young Venezuelan is game to go to the game.

“The fans who went out and voted for me deserve it as much as I do,” Acuña said. “I wouldn’t be there without them.”

Acuña will miss the rest of the Braves 2021 season, a season where they’ve struggled to reach a winning record and his injury is one of several crucial losses for the defending National League East champs.

With 74 games left, the Braves are 44-44 and have not been over .500 in 2021. Along with Acuña, star pitcher Mike Soroka will miss this season after re-injuring his Achilles tendon and having a second surgery.
