The Detroit News says Ely Hydes was walking to the Tigers game at Comerica Park when he claimed the concrete on the Spruce Street pedestrian bridge gave way and he fell about 15 feet. Hydes said he landed near oncoming freeway traffic. State officials have fast-tracked the inspection since Hydes came forward.

The Associated Press says the Detroit Police were looking into the incident and the Michigan Department of Transportation was unaware of the incident. MDOTwasn’t aware of the hole in the bridge until the Detroit News reached out.

MDOT spokesperson Diane Cross told the Detroit News that their email was the first notice, almost a week later, that the department had received about the hole in the bridge. Cross says that the MDOT will be closing the bridge and will be getting the rest of the bridge inspected underneath. The bridge, which was built in 1953, was due for an inspection later this month.
