Ken Jennings returns to ‘Jeopardy!’ in new role

Neither the coronavirus nor Alex Trebek’s ongoing battle with cancer will stop the 37th season of “Jeopardy!”

New episodes of the long-running quiz show premiere Sept. 14.

“I believe we are the first quiz show to come back on the air in the COVID-19 era,” Trebek, who has been battling pancreatic cancer, said in a statement. “On a personal level, I’m excited because it gets me out of the house. It gives me something to do on a regular basis, and I was missing that.”

Filming, albeit without a studio audience, has already started. The set has a new look, with more space between contestant booths and other protocols to ensure safety. Casting is now done virtually as well.

Ken Jennings, who has a record-setting 74 wins, expands his role from prolific contestant to consulting producer where he will present categories, develop projects and serve as an ambassador for the show.

“Though I’ve played my last round of Jeopardy! as a contestant, I’m delighted to have the opportunity to remain involved with my favorite show,” Jennings said. “I’m still in on all the action, but I don’t have to worry about phrasing things in the form of a question anymore.”
