NEW YORK — A 21-year-old New York man is facing myriad charges in connection with the death of a woman whose body was found Friday inside a plastic storage bin dumped on a Bronx sidewalk.
Khalid Barrow was arrested Saturday after investigators connected him to the death of 35-year-old Nisaa Walcott, whom investigators identified as Barrow’s cousin, WNBC reported.
Barrow was arraigned Sunday morning on charges including second-degree murder and three counts of concealment of a human corpse, WABC-TV reported.
Investigators confirmed to WNBC that surveillance video from Walcott’s apartment building, as well as from cameras near the sidewalk outside of a storage facility where her decomposing body was found, played a key role in Barrow’s arrest.
A man who frequents the location to find things he’s able to resell discovered Walcott’s body, the TV station reported.
According to investigators, Walcott’s teenage son last saw her on Feb. 16 when she woke him for school. Since then, his only contact with his mother had been text messages purporting to be from her telling him that she was going away to “take care of business” and that Barrow would be at their home to take care of him, WPIX reported.
When the student returned home that day, he found Barrow cleaning the floor and stated that the apartment smelled strongly of bleach, the TV station reported, citing the criminal complaint.
Surveillance video from Feb. 18 shows a ski mask-clad man checking out roof cameras. Hours later, cameras captured footage of a man stepping onto the elevator in Walcott’s building while “dragging what appears to be a clear plastic bin with a yellow or light-colored towel or blanket on top of it and press the elevator button,” according to the criminal complaint.
Meanwhile, video from Friday appears to show two individuals take a plastic bin from the roof of Walcott’s building to the elevator and out the front entrance. Surveillance video from a short while later in the Bronx appeared to show two people remove a bin from a sport utility vehicle and drag it to the sidewalk, the complaint stated.
An autopsy performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that Walcott’s hyoid, a bone in the neck, had been fractured and concluded that her body was in a high state of decomposition, WPIX reported.
