Standoff Prompts 2 School Lockdowns

SUWANEE, Ga. — Two Gwinnett County schools were lockdown over a suicidal armed man in the area, police said.

Police Standoff Puts Schools On Lockdown

A Gwinnett County Schools representative said Collins Hill High School and Walnut Grove Elementary School were locked down Tuesday afternoon. The schools are across from each other on Taylor Road in Suwanee.

Gwinnett police said the incident began with a man fighting with his girlfriend Tuesday morning. At some point after his girlfriend left the home unharmed, the man was threatening to commit suicide, Gwinnett police said.

When officers reached the scene, police said the man was armed with a shotgun outside the home, which is 300 yards away from one of the schools. Negotiators worked to talk the man down. After several hours, he surrendered to police and was transported to the hospital for evaluation, Gwinnett police Cpl. Edwin Ritter said.

"At this time he is not charged with any crimes," he said in a news release.

School officials said the schools were locked down to follow safety guidelines.

"Although this is not a school-related incident, the schools were placed in lockdown as a precaution, following school safety protocols," the school system said on its Facebook page.

The lockdowns delayed school dismissals, but students were released following the surrender.
