Women tried to smuggle marijuana, phones, saw blades into Georgia prison with drone

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ga. — Washington County deputies intercepted an attempted contraband drop at Washington State Prison on May 3, leading to the arrest of two Duluth women.

A call for a suspicious vehicle led deputies to a field where they found the contraband, which included nearly three pounds of marijuana, tobacco products, cell phones, chargers, clothing items, and saw blades that were hidden in a field.

Based on the charges, the women were attempting to use a drone to drop the items inside the jail.

Evidence at the scene also linked the women’s car to the contraband.

Mariana Torres, 17, and Anyela Contreras Torres, 19, both of Duluth, were taken into custody, and their car was impounded.

Both women face numerous charges, including unmanned aircraft to accomplish violations, possession of drone during crime, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, items prohibited by inmates, trading with inmates (phones), trading with inmates (drugs), trading with inmates (tobacco), possession of weapon during commission of crime, possession of tools during commission of crime.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office has taken over the case, and the investigation remains ongoing for further follow-up.
