ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — A Covington woman is accused of stealing mail from more than 100 people in three counties in recent weeks.
Police say 37-year-old Teresa Knight cashed a stolen check at a convenience store. When they searched her car, they say they found a travel bag stuffed with hundreds of pieces of mail.
"Checks that were being sent to individuals for payment, credit cards, W-2 forms that could be used in identity theft and other documents," Covington Police Sgt. Kenneth Malcolm said.
Police said they traced a path that showed Knight stole mail in Newton, Rockdale and Walton counties. They say they are still trying to locate victims.
"We're trying to figure out really, how much damage she's been able to do in the last several weeks," Malcolm said.
One of the victims was a Covington law firm.
"We got a call from a convenience store clerk. He had just cashed a payroll check and wanted to know if the woman's name on the check worked for us. Of course, she didn't,” Attorney Frank Turner told Channel 2’s Tom Regan.
Knight is charged with forgery in the first degree, identity fraud and two drug-related charges.
Knight remains in jail. Police says she could face additional state and federal charges and there could be more arrests in the case.
