Wildfire shuts down part of Georgia island wildlife refuge (Savannah Coastal Refuges Complex)

SAVANNAH, Ga. — A wildfire spanning an estimated 100 acres is burning at Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge in Savannah, Ga. according to the refuge.

Smoke from the fire, started by a lightning strike, has been reported as far as Tybee Island and Hilton Head, according to local outlet WJCL.

Officials said the fire is active near the Fire Trail and Pavilion Trail areas, which have been closed due to safety reasons, in addition to the boat dock.

The north and south ends of Wassaw Island are still open for public beach use.
