Police investigate shooting death of man in parking lot

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Police are searching for whoever was responsible for leaving a man dead in a parking lot at a Gwinnett County apartment complex.

Gwinnett County police were called Sunday night to the Indian Trail Apartment Homes after receiving a report of shots fired.

Officers said they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds lying in the parking lot.

The Gwinnett County Police Department’s homicide unit identified the victim as 43-year-old Vernie Burroughs.

Records show that Burroughs had lived in the complex for about a year with his wife.

A security guard would not allow Channel 2’s cameras on the property. Residents told Channel 2’s Tony Thomas that they were ordered not to talk.

Investigators said multiple shots were fired at the victim.

“There was a report of citizen calling and saying there were six gunshots,” Gwinnett County police Sgt. Brian Doan said.

Investigators said that so far, there is little evidence and no eyewitnesses.

“As we can tell right now, the 911 calls that came in were not direct witnesses to the crime itself,” Gwinnett police Cpl. Michele Pihera said.

Callers reported hearing several shots and a vehicle speeding away.

“Right now we don’t have any credible leads in this case, so we are desperate to get this information out there, and get anyone to come forward,” Pihera said.

Thomas spoke with Burroughs’ mother in South Carolina. She said she didn’t know exactly what happened and was waiting on more information from her daughter-in-law
