Investigators said the victim was deceived into withdrawing the money and turning it over to individuals connected to the scam.

The sheriff’s office investigated the case using bank records, Uber records and Cash App records.

As a result of the investigation, Stephen Rupert Hunter was booked into the Jasper County Jail on charges including theft by deception and exploitation of an elder person.

Investigators also identified records linking Naylen J’Shon Bates to Uber and Cash App activity associated with the case.

The sheriff’s office is reminding the public that law enforcement agencies and financial institutions will not ask people to withdraw cash or hand money to a courier as part of an investigation.
