EAST POINT, Ga. — East Point police say three family members stole thousands of dollars in rent payments from tenants at an apartment complex, leaving some residents facing eviction despite believing their rent had been paid.

According to arrest warrants, police say the trio took more than $65,000 from at least 60 victims through an alleged scheme involving rent checks and money orders intended for the Fulton Pointe Apartments.
Investigators have arrested Destiny Dorsey and Christia Smith.
Channel 2’s Tyisha Fernandes reports that Cynthia Dorsey was taken into custody Thursday.
One of the alleged victims, Kayla Sherrod, told Fernandes she was evicted from Fulton Pointe Apartments in April while caring for a newborn.
“It feels like a real bad joke,” Sherrod said.
Sherrod said she initially did not understand why she was being evicted because her mother had paid several months of rent in advance.

“So she paid from basically December all the way ‘til May, so she paid in forward, but they said they never received the payment,” Sherrod said.
Sherrod showed Channel 2 Action News paperwork related to her eviction. The documents list Destiny Dorsey as the plaintiff in the eviction case.
Now, Destiny Dorsey is among those accused in the fraud investigation.
According to the warrants, Destiny Dorsey, Christia Smith and Cynthia Dorsey each face six fraud-related charges.
Police allege the women intercepted and stole tenants’ rent checks and money orders over several months.
Sherrod said she began noticing a troubling pattern throughout the apartment complex.
“The people downstairs, they ended up getting put out first. Then the people across the hall got put out. Then the people in the back of the apartments kept getting put out,” Sherrod said. “And I’m like, ‘Why is everybody getting put out? This is crazy.’”
The eviction placed an additional burden on Sherrod’s family as her mother recovered from a stroke.
“She’s in a nursing home right now. She can’t walk, she can’t talk, she can’t do nothing,” Sherrod said.
Police are asking anyone with information about Cynthia Dorsey’s whereabouts to contact East Point police.
The investigation remains ongoing as police believe the three stole money from other apartment complexes as well.
