Channel 2 gets inside look at Amazon’s new disaster relief hub

UNION CITY, Ga. — As the hurricane season gets underway one company is making sure Georgians are prepared.

Channel 2 Action News got an inside look at Amazon’s new disaster relief hub.

The company told Channel 2’s Justin Carter it comes down to being prepared.

“We’ve deployed more than 20 million disaster relief items to impacted communities,” Amazon spokeswoman Shemeeka Johnson said.

The company doubled its capacity in Union City two years ago to both stores and deploy items such as wipes, tarps, and bottled water to victims of natural disasters.

The American Red Cross is working in partnership with Amazon to make sure items get to families.

Dee Dixon is the American Red Cross of Georgia’s regional CEO.

“We have Amazon on speed dial. They really help us with their warehouse storage and they provide a lot of relief efforts in time of need,” Dixon said.

From warehouse to a disaster zone, in a short amount of time, Amazon says its about location.

The metro area is centrally located to deploy these items in hard hit areas and with help from technology such as drone-equipped disaster response Jeep, they are making it happen.

“What I love about this is that we are able to take the same logistical approach to our services as we are to disaster relief,” Johnson said.
