Big Boi receives key to city, Global Icon award from his hometown

EAST POINT, Ga. — Antwan “Big Boi” Patton was awarded the Global Icon award by the city of East Point. He was honored at a ceremony held on Feb. 10 at East Point City Hall. Patton was awarded this honor because of his contributions in music. I guess it can be said the city of East Point liked the way he moved.

Receiving awards in not something new for one half of the Grammy award winning, multi platinum selling Outkast member. However, being honored by a community that played a pivotal part in molding his music career must mean something extra special.

Patton met Andre Benjamin, also known as Andre 3000, the other half of the trailblazing group Outkast while attending Tri Cities High school in East Point.

Patton was also awarded a key to the city by East Point Mayor, Deana Holiday. Mayor Holiday also issued a proclamation marking Feb. 10, 2021 as Antwan “Big Boi” Patton day in the city of East Point.

“His musical contributions have made a lasting impact around the world and put a spotlight on the City of East Point. Big Boi’s success is not only a representation of Black History, but American History as well,” Holiday said.

The event was organized by Ward A councilman Lance Robertson’s office.

“Coming out of 2020, we felt it was important to recognize a history maker who has influenced the world through their musical contributions, which has an East Point origin, and to inspire our youth of today to be their best,” Robertson said.
