School paraprofessional accused of choking student

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Clayton County school police have arrested a paraprofessional accused of choking, kicking and threatening a student.

Clayton County's school police chief says the incident happened Feb. 10. The victim reported it the next day.

The suspect was immediately relieved of classroom duties and then arrested Thursday after an investigation.

The chief says school police will aggressively investigate any allegations of somebody hurting a student.

A Clayton County school police major says paraprofessional Carlos McGill was in a classroom at Ash Street School South Metro Educational Center in Forest Park when he allegedly leapt from his chair and knocked a student to the floor.

Police said McGill then began choking the student, leaving visible lacerations under his chin.

"He's 51 years of age and the juvenile victim is approximately 14 years of age," said Maj. Alan Parker with the Clayton County School Police. "There was some exchange of words and at some point the paraprofessional struck the student."

The major says documents indicate when the student got up, McGill attacked him again, hitting him in the face and head.

The report says when McGill was restrained he still kicked the 14-year-old in the back of the head.

A document suggests as other staffers restrained McGill, he yelled, "I will kill that little mother (expletive)."

Jackson says the school where it happened serves students with emotional or behavioral disorders as part of the Georgia Network for Educational and Therapeutic Support.

"Mr. McGill was terminated according to our protocols," said Clayton County Schools Superintendent Luvenia Jackson. "We acted quickly to investigate the actions once they came to our attention."

Channel 2 investigative reporter Mark Winne was in court Friday when McGill faced a judge. McGill is charged with the felony offense of aggravated assault.

Winne said he didn't hear any of McGill's side of the story in court.

When we can get that, we plan to bring it to you.

The chief says the superintendent's stance is when there's an issue, address it forthrightly and let the community know it proactively.
