3 dead after Rockdale County shooting rampage

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — Investigators are working two shooting scenes in Rockdale County.

They said the suspect shot and killed two people at a liquor store, and then went home and shot his parents.

Deputies confirmed the gunman is 36-year-old Jeffrey Scott Pitts, who is also dead.

Rockdale County sheriff's deputies swarmed the magnet package store along Bell Road in Conyers.  Locals could not believe somebody fired gunshots inside.

"It's crazy.  It's crazy.  I can't believe this happened so close to home.  It's all I can say," customer Don Rogers said.

Early Sunday afternoon, a man detectives described as a regular customer of the liquor store, had a run-in with a clerk over an unpaid bill.

The clerk apparently kept his identification.  Investigators say a few hours later, the suspect came back to get it with a gun.

"At some point he began firing shots inside the store, striking, we believe, two individuals in the store," Rockdale County Sheriff Eric Levett said.

Levett said Pitts killed a clerk and a customer, then went home along Ebenezer Road, where he shot his own parents.  When a deputy arrived, he opened fire on the officer, possibly with an assault rifle found at the scene.

"He continued to fire shots at the deputy.  The deputy returned fire," Levitt said.

Levett said the suspect was hit.  Customers said the people who run the store are well-known and well liked.

"They're nice. Its family oriented.  You hate to see stuff like this go on.  That's it," a customer said.
