SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — A Sandy Springs K9 officer and his handler are getting special praise from a metro family after a harrowing experience.

On June 6, police arrested Fortune Jaquan Spencer after they said he shot and killed his girlfriend, Sherika Monique Little, in front of a hotel at the intersection of Peachtree Dunwoody Road and Hammond Drive.

Then, police said Spencer shot another person while attempting to carjack them to get away, before successfully carjacking another woman. Spencer was captured after crashing his car not far from the scene.

Officer Sean Hanse and his K9, Igor, responded to the scene and came across the shaken carjacking victim, keeping her calm as she called her own father to tell him what happened.

The woman’s father stopped by Sandy Springs Police Headquarters recently to thank Hanse and K9 Igor for their help and left them a note of appreciation, which was posted to social media:

“I (and my family) can’t thank you enough for the level of empathy and concern you displayed with my daughter during the recent incident involving a felon trying to carjack her vehicle during the commission of other crimes,” the father, who didn’t want to be identified, wrote in the letter. “As a father who will do anything to keep his children safe, I am glad you were there to do so when I could not be.”

The father went on to say “your ability to see the person and do what is right is a testament to your professionalism and who you are. Your actions will leave a lasting impression on us and will forever be appreciated.”

To thank Hanse and Igor for their help, the father left Igor a present, a logo sign for the beer, “Landshark” Lager because Hanse often refers to Igor as a “Landshark.”

Hanse’s wife wrote about the kind gesture on Facebook:

“A few weeks ago, in the heat of the rioting in downtown Atlanta, my husband was on-call and involved in an incident with a felon/carjacking/murder... (The father’s) daughter was the bad-guys last attempt to carjack her vehicle; she was quick to respond and avoided incident but not before her vehicle was damaged. The bad-guy was struck by her vehicle and Sean was the officer to find her terrified and shaken... he stayed with her and consoled her & her dad over the phone while other officers were at the crime scene.

Today, (He) showed up at the precinct with this beautiful card and gift in appreciation for keeping his child safe. The young girl and her family are the real heroes here. The bad-guy is in jail; unfortunately he murdered someone before this, shot another and assaulted an elder lady, but faith is restored in such a horrific time when honestly Sean was just doing his job.
