People still living in condemned Roswell apartments having hard time finding new homes

ROSWELL, Ga. — Some residents of a condemned apartment complex in Roswell are struggling to move out.

The building is plagued with structural problems, but more than a dozen tenants still live there.

It’s known as the Pelfrey Pines Apartments on Grove Way.

Channel 2′s Bryan Mims learned that the residents were supposed to be out in August. Finding homes for everybody has taken longer than expected.

Eighty-six-year-old Wanda Wilbanks is worried about the cracks in the ceiling.

She fears that her ceiling, like her next-door neighbor’s, might come crashing down.

She and her neighbors were supposed to all move out more than a month ago.

“And you’re still here,” Mims said to Wilbanks.

“Well, my apartment was nasty. It had been empty for a long time, the one I’m going in,” Wilbanks said.

The Gainesville Housing Authority, which manages the property for the Roswell Housing Authority, is working with a third party to handle relocation.

Executive director Beth Brown said it’s been challenging to find homes for those tenants who want to stay in the Roswell area.

But she told Mims by phone that she hopes to have everyone moved out by mid-November.

“Just how disruptive has this been these past few months for you?” Mims asked Wilbanks.

“it’s been rough ‘cause I don’t know if that ceiling’s going to fall in on me or not. It could fall any minute,” Wilbanks said.

The executive director told Mims that engineers routinely inspect the building to make sure it’s safe for the remaining residents.
