Neighbors say airport noise is too much

EAST POINT, Ga. — Neighbors in East Point say they're tired of planes flying above and shaking their homes when they aren't supposed to be in the FAA's flight path.

"Now when it is an all-day thing and you can't hear television in your own home, that's a not a plane that is 3 miles away," said East Point City Councilwoman Nanette Saucier.

Saucier played a recording of the flight noise she made at her house just a few nights ago.

The neighborhood is near Briarwood Boulevard, about 3.5 miles from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

"It is truly a frustrating situation and they keep telling you the same thing over," Saucier said.

Saucier acknowledges she is near the airport, but says the noise has never been this loud.

"It has gotten worse more recently. I don't if they change their flight paths or not but say within two years, I've been hearing them more," another neighbor told Channel 2's Rachel Stockman.

Channel 2 Action News first started investigating the problem two years ago when a retired Army traffic controller started documenting planes flying which he says were flying outside their approved path and over the East Point neighborhood.

Saucier met with airport officials but she says neighbors don't have the resources to do their own noise study.

"I would like the noise officials at the airport to come out and put physical noise monitor.  It seems only way to get validation of what we hear," Saucier said.

"We are happy to meet with anyone that has concerns about the noise. We are not aware of any flight plans that have changed that would affect this neighborhood," said airport spokesman Reese McCranie, adding that their complaints about noise in general have gone down in the last 12 months.
