Metro Atlanta city and county partnering to bring new fire station to the area

Fire station in Brookhaven

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. — The City of Brookhaven and DeKalb County have finalized an agreement to construct a new county-owned and operated fire station at Blackburn Park.

Officials say the facility, designated as Station 34, is intended to improve emergency response times for Brookhaven residents and surrounding communities in North DeKalb County.

DeKalb County Fire Rescue planning first identified the Ashford Dunwoody Road and Johnson Ferry Road corridor for a new station in 2016 to improve coverage in an area challenged by traffic congestion. City leaders deferred action on the intergovernmental agreement at their Sept. 8 meeting to conduct additional community engagement, evaluate alternate sites and address operational questions raised by nearby residents.

Under the terms of the agreement, Brookhaven will lease approximately 1.35 acres at Blackburn Park, located at 3493 Ashford Dunwoody Road, to DeKalb County for 50 years at an annual cost of $1. DeKalb County will construct, own, operate and maintain the new fire facility.

To address concerns from nearby residents, the revised agreement incorporates specific site and traffic provisions. These include emergency signal preemption, roadway markings, lighting standards to minimize impact on nearby homes, additional landscape screening, tree replacement and reasonable efforts to reduce nighttime siren use when conditions permit.

The project will also feature a multi-use path along the Ashford Dunwoody Road frontage and provide approximately 50 public parking spaces to replace parking affected by construction. The station will include a community room for neighborhood meetings and public use, as well as dedicated space for a Brookhaven Police Department vehicle to support public-safety coordination. Officials noted the location at Ashford Dunwoody Road and Johnson Ferry Road provides direct emergency access in multiple directions, including to several nearby senior communities.

Brookhaven Mayor John Park praised the joint effort between the two government entities. “This is a practical, forward-looking partnership that puts public safety first,” Park said. “By working collaboratively with DeKalb County, the City can help create the space needed for an important public-safety investment while preserving the shared goal of serving residents efficiently and responsibly.”
