Police make arrest in Georgia Tech sexual assaults

ATLANTA — Police have made an arrest in the case of two sexual assaults on Georgia Tech's campus.

John Perry Smith was booked into the Fulton County Jail. He's facing two misdemeanor charges of sexual battery, according to Georgia Tech police.

The charges comes after a student told police that Perry walked up behind her outside a dining hall and sexually assaulted her.

Officers said she was walking behind Brittain Dining Hall on Techwood Drive, when a man approached her and reached under her skirt.

Police said the student screamed and the man ran and drove off in a red truck.

On Tuesday, police confirmed a second case of sexual battery on campus Monday night. Police said it happened before the incident near the dining hall and was reported shortly after a Georgia Tech alert was sent out by the school.

Police say a female student was walking down stairs on Techwood just north of Bobby Wood Way near 4th Street, when a man passed her and acted like he fell into her. The victim said the man put his arms around her and grabbed her inappropriately. Police believe the two incidents are connected.

Channel 2's Darryn Moore talked with students on the campus Tuesday about the first incident and they said it scares them.

"I know the risks of living in a big city and I know that whenever I travel at night I need to travel with friends, so it doesn't worry me too much, but at the same time it is really scary," said student Victoria Kravets.

"It was literally right next to a dorm. It's a place I walk through like 20, 30 times a day, so it is kind of frightening," said student Aaron Ranallo.

Georgia Tech police released a picture of the man, later identified as Smith, and his pickup truck.

Police say the student was not injured in the incident. Police expressed their thanks to everyone who helped get the word out about the suspect.
